AMS Osram launches cost-effective single-chip solution for CT scanners_copy

Recently, the world's leading optical solutions provider, ams (SIX: AMS), launched a 32 layer solution for computed tomography (CT) scanners, expanding its sensor chip product portfolio. CT equipment is widely used in many fields such as medical, industrial, or security. Among all these applications, the detector is the determining factor in whether an economically efficient CT scanner can be developed.

Jose Vinau, the head of the Medical and CMOS department at AMS Osram, stated that the AS5951 sensor chip from AMS Osram simplifies detector components. It integrates a high-sensitivity photodiode array and reading circuit into a single CMOS chip. Compared to its predecessor, AS5951 can provide higher resolution images for the same sensing area.

Compared with the previous generation AS5950, the new generation product mainly improves the spatial resolution of the same detector coverage range. The sub millimeter level isotropic pixel spacing can improve the resolution of images. The photodiode array of AS5951 consists of 16 x 8 pixels with a spacing of 0.98 x 0.98 mm ², which is an improvement compared to the previous generation's 0.98 x 1.96 mm ² spacing. Therefore, two AS5951 sensors can be used to achieve a 32 layer detector with a total size of 31.23 mm, while doubling the spatial resolution. To meet higher pixel density requirements, the number of channels in the A/D converter (ADC) has been increased from 64 to 128. The pixel size can be customized within a shorter development cycle to meet customer needs.
